DesignPhiladelphia Festival Returns October 12-23, 2022

Nation’s oldest architecture and design festival boasts about 100 programs and exhibitions citywide and fills the Pier with interactive installations.

(Philadelphia, PA) – September 30, 2022 – The Center for Architecture and Design (Center) is excited to present the 2022 DesignPhiladelphia Festival October 12 - 23, with Thomas Jefferson University (Jefferson) once again supporting this special series of events as title sponsor.

After a smaller, but lively, 2021 COVID friendly comeback festival, 2022 promises to be a celebration of the local designers making an impact on a regional, national, and international scale. Starting with the Kickoff Party at Cherry Street Pier on October 12 from 5:30 - 9:00 PM. Just over 100 programs and exhibits will be happening throughout the city during the 12-day festival, and at the two festival hubs: Cherry Street Pier and the Center for Architecture and Design at 1218 Arch Street.

“This year’s programming has come together in a way that highlights our mission as an organization while touching on some of the more pressing issues of our time. For instance, how does design of the built environment impact how children learn outside of school or how can we create more healthy, equitable and inclusive environments?” says Rebecca Johnson, Executive Director of the Center, “These questions are being asked all over the world and it is exciting to see our local design community rising to the challenge and offering their thoughts and potential solutions.”

Below are some of the programing highlights, to see the full calendar and event details, please visit the DesignPhiladelphia website.

Designing a Learning City Exhibition

October 12 – October 23 | Cherry Street Pier and Center for Architecture and Design

The Center, with funding from the William Penn Foundation, is curating and installing a new exhibition that explores projects led and supported by the Playful Learning Landscapes Action Network (PLLAN). Using the five principles of how kids learn — make it fun, make it active, make it engaging, make it meaningful, and make it socially interactive — PLLAN has worked with community groups and designers to transform public spaces that are not explicitly just for children, such as bus stops, libraries, and parks into hubs of playful learning.

The exhibition will showcase Playful Learning projects at both venues, Cherry Street Pier and the Center, with additional interactive experiences at Cherry Street Pier.

Emerging Designers Showcase

October 12 - 23, 2022 | Cherry Street Pier

This signature exhibition is a new spin on DesignPhiladelphia’s Best in Emerging Design competition. We’ve removed the competition and focused on inviting young and emerging designers to take advantage of prime public space to display their work. This year’s showcase includes furniture, lighting, landscape design, graphic and branding design, and floral design.

Design is Inclusive Exhibition and Panel

October 12 - 23, 2022 | Center for Architecture and Design

Design is Inclusive, an annual DesignPhiladelphia signature program highlighting local designers of diverse backgrounds and experiences. This year’s exhibition will focus on textiles and highlight designers with strong Philadelphia connections both past and present. The Cohort will include Grant Blvd, Hamid Holloman, Lewis Knauss, Liza Niles, Lou Badger, Malene Barnett, Miskeen Originals, Mi-Young Lee Studio, Sheila Bridges, Tim Eads & Tuft the World.

On October 18th, DesignPhiladelphia and it’s partner CFI Workspace are hosting a panel discussion at the Center discussing some of the work in the exhibition and innovations in textile design in general.

Kids Fest

October 15 – 16, 2022| Cherry Street Pier

The 2022 edition of KidsFest is sure to bring all the kids to the pier with workshops by Pal Socks, Fleisher Art Memorial, Stick-lets, Playful Modern Kids, Project Play, Playful Learning.
